How do minor acoustical cues affect male and female voice quality?

چکیده
Speakers' sex identification scores were elicited in order to test the possible perceptual function of minor differentiating cues. The variable cues under investlgation, FO range and F3 location, were manipulated and presented to listeners in a pairwise comparison task. Minor F3 location variation yielded results in the expected direction, whereas FO range proved to be too small to be perceptually distinctlve. Sex-dependent llstenlng behaviour was established and compared with earlier findings.

Voice gender perception by cochlear implantees.
Gender identification of human voices was studied in a juvenile population of cochlear implant (CI) users exposed to naturalistic speech stimuli from 20 male and 20 female speakers using two different voice gender perception tasks. Stimulus output patterns were recorded from each individual CI for each stimulus, and features related to voice fundamental frequency and spectral envelope were extr...

Voice quality variations include a set of voicing sound source modifications ranging from laryngealized to normal to breathy phonation. Analysis of reiterant imitations of two sentences by ten female and six male talkers has shown that the potential acoustic cues to this type of voice quality variation include: (1) increases to the relative amplitude of the fundamental frequency component as op...

In human mate choice, sexually dimorphic faces and voices comprise hormone-mediated cues that purportedly develop as an indicator of mate quality or the ability to compete with same-sex rivals. If preferences for faces communicate the same biologically relevant information as do voices, then ratings of these cues should correlate. Sixty participants (30 male and 30 female) rated a series of opp...
متن کاملHow Do You Say ‘Hello’? Personality Impressions from Brief Novel Voices
On hearing a novel voice, listeners readily form personality impressions of that speaker. Accurate or not, these impressions are known to affect subsequent interactions; yet the underlying psychological and acoustical bases remain poorly understood. Furthermore, hitherto studies have focussed on extended speech as opposed to analysing the instantaneous impressions we obtain from first experienc...

The best actors, particularly classic Shakespearian actors, are experts at vocal expression. With prosodic inflection, change of voice quality, and non-textual utterances, they communicate emotion, emphasize ideas, create drama, and form a complementary language which works with the text to tell the story in the script. To begin to study selected elements of vocal expression in acted speech, co...
